2nd Grade Weekly Newsletter
2nd Grade News
August30-September 3, 2010
Dear Parents,
One week down and many more to come!! The second graders are off to a great start and beginning to settle into a routine. They have been extremely understanding with their teacher who is trying to adjust to her schedule, as well.
Each day, following our morning devotions and rituals, we begin with reading class. So. . . what would you say if your child asked for a new pet – an elephant?? That is the subject of our first reading story. It should be fun! We will begin a unit in reading focused on “friends” this week. We will also do some activities centered on “friends”.
Our vowac (phonics) lessons will cover syllable patterns as well as open and closed syllables. We will also be introduced to a “fat cat-skinny kitty” rule. I understand that these last 2 sentences mean very little to you. But more importantly, they will mean something to the students.
We continue to study the book of James in Bible class and we are learning how Christians should live and speak if they are truly Christians. We will also spend some time talking about the power of prayer. Our memory verse for the week is taken from James 1:19-20: My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
We spent the first week in math reviewing addition facts and writing addition sentences. This week we will focus on subtraction. Sometimes we add and sometimes we subtract to solve a word problem – that is the challenge for the week!
The second graders did well on their first spelling test. This week our spelling words will follow the syllable division rules that we will learn in vowac. The words for the week are:
1.tiny 6.crust 11.have
2.silent 7.tomato 12.was
3.tablet 8.fry 13.want
4.relax 9.zero 14.only
5.rabbit 10.bonnet
The paragraph for the week is:
I want to take tennis lessons. I need a better tennis racket. How can I get one?
(Reminder- the students are to complete their Home Spelling Projects and return them by Friday in order to be eligible for a treat.)
Getting the students to write complete sentences is my goal for them in language this week. Phrases like “naming part, action part, ending mark, complete thought” will be mentioned often by me when they are doing their writing assignments.
In science we will begin by studying plants. We will begin with examining seeds and observe how they grow into plants.
Besides taking pictures on Monday, the other excitement of the week will be an all-school chapel on Friday morning introducing the chapel theme of the year “The Armor of God”.
After a busy but enjoyable weekend, I am ready to dig in and challenge the students with new ideas and knowledge.
