2nd Grade News

March 8-12, 2010
Dear Parents,
This is one of those weeks that it is hard to plan for because of Western’s opportunity to play in the state basketball tournament in Des Moines. I don’t know how many times I have said the word “if”. I will be gone on Monday afternoon to attend the game on Monday night. Craig Stiemsma has offered to take over my class for the remainder of the afternoon. I’m sure the kids will have fun with him – thanks Craig! Then IF Western wins, I will be gone on Thursday and Friday as well so there will be a substitute teacher for those 2 days. So you can see why things are so “IFFY” right now.
Regardless of where I am, there will be students and there will be a teacher to teach them in second grade.
We continue to work on subtraction with two-digit numbers in math. We will be estimating differences this week as well as some problem solving with subtraction.
We have been having fun talking about celebrating birthdays and the different traditions that each family has. We also learned how some other countries celebrate birthdays much differently than we do. This week we will be reading a story about a little girl who becomes very jealous when she has to welcome a new baby into her home. I’m sure I will hear some interesting stories about some very similar feelings from a few second graders.
We have spent a l-o-n-g time on the /oo/ sound as in moon. This week we will have a test over words containing the /oo/ sound but spelled in a variety of ways.
It has been interesting to listen to some of the teachings of Jesus by way of parables. This week we will continue with the parable of the mustard seed and also the hidden treasure and the pearl. We forgot to recite the memory verse last Friday so we will review it the first part of this week and then say it later in the week. (Matt. 13:8a, 23a)
Our spelling words for the week are words that have the ‘ou’ vowel team – the sound that you hear in the word “out”. We will also review some of the other words that we have already studied.
1.mousetrap                    9.which
2.count                           10.should
3.round                           11.raise
4.outside                         12.voyage
5.cloud                            13.loose
6.many                            14.everywhere
7.their                              15.youth
8.choice
The paragraph for the week is:
My grandfather loves to fish. He knows where to find the big ones. He almost always catches some.
As I stated in the last newsletter, we are beginning a letter-writing unit. This week we will review our addresses and learn how to write them correctly. We will also write a (pretend) letter to our favorite fairy tale character. Each student should bring the address of someone they wish to write a letter to because later in the unit, we will be writing a letter and bringing it to the post office and mailing it. (I told the students it should be someone who lives in a different town than they live in. It could be a grandparent, aunt or uncle, cousin, friend, etc.)
We continue to study the symbols of our country in social studies. This week we will study the bald eagle and also the liberty bell.
Regardless of what happens in Des Moines, it will be a busy week in second grade at HCS. Have a good week!
                        GO WESTERN!      Mrs. Eekhoff
