Dear Parents,
It’s a Tuesday, and I know that I am going to be feeling like it is a Monday all day! I hope that you and your families had a great Labor Day week-end.
I have visited with a few moms who have expressed concern that they aren’t able to identify every insect that their fifth grade entomologist has found. That’s completely understandable. There are about one million insects in the world that have been named-plus the ones that haven’t! Try to get the insect into the correct order. For example, if you know it is some kind of moth, but you can’t find it in the insect guide, then just make sure to place it with the “Butterflies and Moths” in the collection. Since you can’t specifically identify it, then I don’t expect you to write any facts about it other than that it is a moth, and belongs to the Butterflies/Moths order. If you aren’t even sure of the order but can tell that it is an insect, just put it by itself with “Order Unknown beside it. Please call me if you are confused about any of this. 439-1176.
This week’s happenings:
-Spelling pre-test Wed., final test Fri. over Unit 2 words
-Bible-studying t/ stories of Noah and Abraham and Isaac.
There is no Bible memory work, but we will be learning the words to the song “You Are Our God; We Are Your People,” found on page 272 of the Psalter Hymnal. The lyrics are a great way to help kids understand the truths of this week’s Bible stories. We won’t write this song until next week Friday, however.
-Science-It’s where it’s happening in fifth grade.
Last week, Colyn brought a monarch caterpillar to school. It was so intent on eating the milkweek plant it had claimed that it didn’t even seem to notice that it had been placed in a glass pitcher. “Melvin Monarch” didn’t seem to mind curious eyes and promptly spun a chrysalis. A monarch chrysalis is beautiful. We are waiting to be able to see through the chrysalis and we are hoping that the new adult butterfly emerges during the daytime when we are around!
Our painted lady larva (caterpillars) should arrive any day. When they do, we’ll set up the “nursery!” Also Sunday Ford will be here on Friday to help us “snag and tag” monarch butterflies. We hope they stay around another week. ( We’ll have a test on Thursday over what we’ve learned about insects.)
-Social Studies-On Wednesday we’ll have a vocabulary test over Chapter 5 of Unit 2 in our S.S. textbooks.
Have a great week, everyone!
